A message from the Superintendent

Dear WCS families,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to share important information regarding the Michigan Secure Storage Law, which went into effect on February 13, 2024. This law is designed to help protect our youth and reduce firearm-related injuries by requiring firearm owners to securely store firearms whenever minors are present or likely to be present.

Key points of the law include:

  • Firearms must be securely stored in a manner that prevents unauthorized access by minors.

  • Schools are required to share information about this law with parents and guardians to promote awareness and compliance.

  • The law applies regardless of where the firearm is stored, whether in the home or elsewhere, when minors could access it.

The following resources contain critical guidance on compliance with Michigan’s firearm storage regulations. They can also be found on the WCS webpage (link this site)

This one-page summary of MCL 28.429 outlines secure storage requirements, importance and benefits of secure storage to help keep children safe, and frequently asked questions.

House Bills 5450 & 5451, outlines safe storage requirements for firearms, penalties for noncompliance, and frequently asked questions.

Offers age-appropriate videos and tips for talking with children about gun safety.

Focuses on promoting responsible gun ownership and secure firearm storage to reduce accidental shootings and deaths among children.

Additional resources and information can be found on Michigan Department of Education.

As a district, we are committed to supporting the safety and well-being of all students. We encourage families to review these requirements and take all necessary precautions to ensure compliance.

Sincerely,

John C. Bernia, Jr., Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
